Washington, DC – On the eve of the Republican primary in California, the Hispanic Leadership Network released its “Top 10 Facts about Hispanics in California.” Below are some interesting facts about Hispanics in the Golden State.
- California’s Hispanic population is 14,013,719, or approximately 38% of the state’s total population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010).
- From 2000 to 2010, California’s Hispanic population grew by an estimated 28% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010).
- There are 5,386,000 Hispanic eligible voters in California, the largest Hispanic eligible voter population nationally, which constitute 24% of all eligible voters in the state (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
- Among the Hispanic population in California, 62% are native-born while 38% are foreign-born (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
- The median age for Hispanics in California is 27, whereas the median age of Non-Hispanic Whites is 44 (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
- In California, 29% of Hispanics do not have health insurance, whereas 11% of Non-Hispanic Whites are uninsured (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).
- In California, the 2011 annual average for Hispanic unemployment was 13.8% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Population Survey, 2011).
- The high school graduation rate for Hispanics in California is nearly 40% (Editorial Projects in Education Resource Center, 2011).
- From 2002 to 2007, there was a 32.5% increase in the number of Hispanic-owned businesses in California (Small Business Administration, 2011).
- The median income of Hispanics 16 years of age and older is $20,000 in California, compared to $40,000 for Non-Hispanic Whites in the same age group (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).

Jennifer S. Korn is Executive Director of the Hispanic Leadership Network. Ms. Korn has 18 years of experience as a conservative strategist. Previously, Ms. Korn served in the George W.
